Getting to the top of Search Engines with inbound links

March 25th, 2010

Inbound links are links from another external site that point to a page on your site. Google and many search engines see link popularity as part of the way they evaluate and rank your website. An inbound link from another reputable website is seen as a “positive endorsement or vote” towards the quality of your website.

These links form a vital part of online marketing and the more links from other relevant websites to yours, the better. Here are some ways to get one way links pointing to your website.

Submission to Relevant Directories & Search Engines

You should submit your website to as many relevant search engines and web directories as possible, especially those in your country or your industry.

Blogging

A blog is essentially a diary or journal that is available on the web. The updating of a blog is known as “blogging” and someone who uses a blog is a “blogger.” Blogs are usually updated daily or weekly, using blogging software that allows you, with little or no technical skills or background to update and maintain the blog.

Having a blog gives you an increased presence on major search engines, like Yahoo! Bing and Google. If your blog is set up correctly, every message that you post creates a new page so in a very short time you could have a lot of pages pointing back to your website, bringing you lots of new visitors.

You can find other external blogs on the web that are related (but not in direct competition to you) where you can use the “blog comments” feature to add a comment to one of their articles they have posted. Lots of blogs allow you to have a link that can “point” back to your own home page of your website or blog.

Press Releases – online

When something new and exciting happens on your website, your can write a short press release about the “happening” and your business. This will not only bring you lots of new customers (free), but will also give you lots of credibility. Stories about your business in the press are far more powerful, believable and attractive than any adverts you could possibly run.
A press release (also called media or news releases) should provide enough concise detail to be informative, but it should also leave out just enough information to be tantalizing so that the person calls you to find out more.

Articles

You get excellent free publicity when you write an article on the web. Publishing an article is free. The exposure and publicity that you receive by having your article published online can be worth lots of money compared to the equivalent in paperbased advertising. A well-written article will give you better results than any advert. You also earn respect from potential customers who will see you as an “expert” in your field.

An article is a short piece of information that aims to inform and educate people about something which they are interested in. The article is usually between 500 and 3,000 words long. The bonus is that at the bottom of your article you can place what is known as a “resource box” and which contains a link to your web site. See an example of my resource box at the bottom of this article. There are hundreds of article directories on the web – all with different appropriate categories where you can publish your article.

The most popular articles are ‘tips’ or “how to” or expert advice pieces. People are looking for advice and guidance and will eventually buy from an expert who shows them how to solve their problem. The best thing about articles is that if your articles are well written they will begin to spread “virally”, meaning that people will copy the articles from the article directories and include them on their own website – all with that important link back to your website.

Videos

During the past couple of years video has become very popular as a marketing strategy, because it can quickly generate visitor traffic and interest. I think everyone has heard of http://youtube.com. There are videos for absolutely any subject and users can search for any topic under the sun.

Unfortunately many people are still afraid to use it and think it’s difficult to do – not so. One of the major advantages of videos to traditional word marketing is that it saves your potential customers a lot of time seeing and understanding what you offer and there isn’t much other effort required on their part … they just start the online video and everything is explained to them right there and then.

Hearing and seeing you (maybe) tell them about your products or services has enormous credibility and allows you to connect with your visitors on a more personal and an emotional level. Obviously, the video has a link back to your site.
